I *heart* ROM

It's too bad that ROM is getting old, and needs to go off to a farm in the country where it will have lots of room to run around and many bunnies to chase.

Maybe some weekend, we can go out to the farm and visit ROM.

It'll be best for both us and ROM, because ROM just doesn't have enough room to run here in the city. It'll be better this way.

I know you'll miss ROM. We will all miss ROM, a lot. But, just think how happy ROM'll be!

One day, maybe in a little while, we'll get a new mud. We could even call it ROM after our good mud.

Now it's time to go. Here ROM! Come here, boy! That's a good ROM, just jump up into the car.

Where has everyone gone?!

Some of you have wondered where people are hiding out now that ROM's demise is painfully clear and near. Last year I found a really good mud and a couple months ago I asked the imp (Matrim) to post an invitation for ROM players to go to his mud and check it out.

For those of you who haven't been on for a while, I decided to copy/paste his invitation. A majority of the ROM regulars have made the transition to the new mud already, and here's hoping that the rest of you will follow...

[182] Jaeric: You are invited

To: all

Normally this (mudvertising) would be a bad thing, but considering the circumstances and the fact that I have Kroz's permission, I am extending an invitation.

The address is: matmud.game-host.org 4000

We are a ROM-based mud that has been heavily developed for 4 years. Highlights include a broad range of random items ala Diablo, an open-ended skill system where you may build your own class, near endless development by spending experience on stat perks, and persistent NPC quests that give everyone a variety of goals to accomplish.

The mud isn't finished but still has more for players to do than most finished products. We're still improving and updating things reguarly and seek the input of interested players to help guide the progress.

This won't fit everyone. It's more like a computer RPG than a mud. The game itself is more complicated than it needs to be, but we are friendly and enjoy helping new players get into the game. A number of things are in place to ensure the complexity doesn't spoil the fun if given a chance.

Everyone is welcome to stop by. You can drop a tell to me under the name Matrim. If available, I'm happy to discuss the game. I am also s rry for the departure of ROM and wish the timing and situation were better. But those of you looking for a new home should find our casual and friendly environment worth your time if the game itself appeals.

I've written a newbie guide to help with http://projectbob.myfreeforum.org/sutra1965.php#196

- Matrim

I hope to see you there!

P.S. The 'regulars' that play there are myself, Foxtail, Faltos/Roman, Gunther, Vinc/Garett, Longstrom, Dynaplex, Petter, Bethie, Morgon, Hexed/Helix, Nayrd and a few more. I didn't know if they wanted me to say who their character names are there, so you'll have to figure that out for yourself. ;)

Bye Bye

Well, It might be a little late, but I would like to say that I really loved to play with you all. I know that I will still meet some of you, in Bob or in other muds, or hear of you on the blog or in frappr, but I will miss the good times spent in ROM...
I created my first character, Nixon (not a crook!), in 1998. It took some time to learn some tricks of the game, so that years later, I could for the first time get past level 30, with Aeon, currently my favorite character (mages rock!). In all these years, I had a second home here. Felt joyful, desperate, and happy about my character several times (even had my heart beating fast before some fights!). I had honorable adventuring companions (including some that, because of my sloooow levelling, asked for my help when newbies, then ended helping me out - one of these even became an Imm!), broke some rules (always by accident *blink innocently*), and met extremely helpful and friendly Immortals.
There are some names that I will never forget: Arkon, Kroz, Noelani, Foxtail, Nall, Luminousity, Dierna, Hino, Gothos, Scorpios, Xenanna, Marina and so many others...
Besides the good people, that I might even meet somewhere else, I will miss the game itself. It is by far the best mud I ever played, and I feel it will take long before I find another good as this one. It is really a pity to see it close. I really wish that it will re-open someday, but, anyway, borrowing Kroz's words, I am proud that I've been part of the playerbase of this glorious MUD.

[]s to all of you!

just a line...

well, i will not spend your time whining or crying, nor will i say that i can host ROM for a while (or for ever, which really does not really differ for me). i just wanted to say thanks for everybody who made ROM happening. like 8 years (ok, not every day, but some hours once now and then) here made my life like more colorful (and i hope other lifes, too). and what i do apreciate most - the atmosphere. i will miss it. really. in fact i just can't think of any other place that would do...

take care everyone. i'll miss you.

p.s. the warmest hugs go to : xenanna, lotex, foxtail and others whose names i can not remember (bad memory, sorry guys). and yes, Kroz.
pps. i'll be hanging around somewhere... playing with wireless bridges, routing loops, DHCP and watching over dumb users giving away their passwords. if something important happens - just write me a line.

Ancient history

Just noticed this sitting around in an old account - no idea why I saved it. =)

It was copied from a usenet posting by Ezra heralding the return of ROM from the first time version 2 went down (gotta be specific since ROM I also went down). The date on the file is 8/22/96. My apologies for the formatting, pasting didn't translate well.

The original Rivers of Mud is back on a new site! Zump and Alander have
spent over a year upgrading and improving the mud, waiting until
another dedicated site could be found. A local freenet agreed to host the
mud, and after working with them closely for several long months, we're
proud to announce that we are open to the public.

All of the older player files are still intact. Yes, *intact*. So, if
you're an older player, you should be able to pick up where you left off two
years ago. For those of you who've been patiently playing on the test site,
those player files are still there, too.
